Boren Scholarship and Award Details

Available to undergraduates, the Boren Scholarship funds study abroad in a region or country considered critical to U.S. national security. Also, the Scholarship prioritizes long-term cultural immersion.

As such, applicants should propose study abroad programs of six months or more. This may include a full academic year program or a combination of summer study with a semester or year-long program.

It is pertinent to note that summer-only programs are an option only for students in the STEM fields (sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

The Boren Scholarship provides up to $25,000 to U.S. undergraduate students. As stated earlier, this is from any major to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including:

  • Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe.
  • Also, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Boren Scholars must study abroad for one, preferably two semesters. This is in order to promote long-term linguistic and cultural immersion. However, STEM majors may secure funding for summer programs, see below for more information).

Boren Scholarships focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security.

National security is broadly defined to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting American well-being but also areas such as:

  • Sustainable development.
  • Environmental degradation.
  • Global disease and hunger.
  • Population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness.

Recipients of the scholarship agree to work in the federal government and serve national security interests for at least one year. And this is after completing their study abroad (deferred until after graduate study should one pursues that option).

The Boren Awards program also includes the Boren Fellowship for graduate students, also supported by NISO.

Boren Stem Initiative

The Boren Scholarship offers a special initiative for undergraduate STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) majors. And this funds up to $8,000 for summer study abroad (minimum of 8 weeks).

Boren Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

The following are the Boren Scholarship requirements:

  • You must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application.
  • You must have a High school diploma (or equivalent).
  • Also, you must have enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at the time of application and during study abroad.
  • Additionally, you must have a commitment to national security (broadly defined). And a desire to work in government service in an area pertaining to national security after graduation.
  • Also, your academic background and preparation must be commensurate with your future career goals. Example: Independent projects or another study abroad experience, language learning, internships, volunteer experience, etc.
  • Also, you must have enrolled in a study abroad program that prioritizes language learning and immersion

Boren Scholarship Additional Requirements

  • You have a clear connection between one who is chosen to study abroad program, desire to pursue language learning and future goals in relation to national security.
  • Also, must have cultural knowledge and adaptability, flexibility, and maturity
