Mengo school of nursing and midwifery in Uganda is the oldest. They regard it as the center of medicine in Uganda and was the first school for nursing and midwifery in both Uganda and all of East Africa.
About Mengo School of Nursing and Midwifery
The Church Missionary Society (CMS) of England dispatched a group of missionaries to Uganda in response to the aforementioned King’s invitation. Dr Sir Albert Ruskin Cook, a physician who arrived in Uganda on February 15, 1897, was a member of the team.
Dr Cook quickly saw that in order to minister to the Ugandan people’s spiritual needs, he also needed to address their severe physical conditions.
As a result, on February 22, 1897, Sir Dr Cook held his first outpatient clinic on Namirembe Hill, the site of today’s Mengo Hospital, under a tree.

They planted the first seed for the Christian Medical work in Uganda with that one incident. Since then, the effort has been unbrokenly expanding and developing in size.

- Nursing and Midwifery
- You must have passed Maths, English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at ‘O’ level and should be 18 years and above.
- Course Duration: 2 ½ years
Diploma Courses
Medical Laboratory Technology
Must have a.
- Principal pass in either Chemistry or Biology and a subsidiary pass from the other, plus any other subsidiary pass.
- Certificate in Medical Laboratory Assistant Course
- Certificate in Nursing /Midwifery
- Certificate in Environmental Health Sciences
- Certificate in Health-related disciplines that is equivalent to the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education [UACE]. Also, determined by the National Council in consultation with the Uganda National Examinations Board and AHPC.
- Course duration: 3 years
- Nursing /Midwifery
- Must be a qualified Certificate Nurse or Midwife who has served for not less than 2 years.
- Course duration: 1½ years

Certificate in Midwifery [CM]

1. Completion or possession of an O-Level Certificate with passes in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
2. Must be 18 years and/or above.
3. Must have been in school within the previous 3 years before applying.
4. Candidates MUST satisfy the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) interview panel.
