Note: Georgia public and private high school students can track their Zell Miller Scholarship status from high school through their GAfutures account at My High School HOPE GPA.

What You Should Know about the Zell Miller Scholarship

The Zell Miller Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship program. And it is for Georgia residents who have demonstrated academic achievement.

This scholarship provides money to assist students with the educational costs of attending a postsecondary institution located in the state of Georgia.

Zell Miller Scholarship Eligibility

To be eligible for the Zell Miller Scholarship, note. Students must:

  • Graduate from high school with a 3.70 cumulative GPA. This is as calculated by Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC).
  • Have SAT score of 1200. Or an ACT score of 26.
  • Also, meet all the eligibility requirements of the HOPE Scholarship.
  • Additionally, be enrolled in a degree-seeking undergraduate program. However, full-time enrollment is not required to receive Zell Miller funding.

Zell Miller Award Amounts

For 2022-23, the Zell Miller Scholarship pays 100% of the total cost of in-state tuition charged. And this is a maximum of $10,258 for two semesters of enrollment in 15 credit hours per term.

However, for students who are enrolled for the summer semester, the Zell Miller Scholarship will pay per credit hour. And this is in conjunction with summer tuition costs in addition to the maximum mentioned above.

Zell Miller Scholarship Basic Eligibility

The Zell Miller Scholarship program requires students to meet basic requirements. This is to be awarded initially after high school graduation and maintained while enrolled in an eligible college or university (postsecondary institutions).  An eligible student must:

  • Meet U.S. citizenship or eligible non-citizen requirements.
  • Also, meet the postsecondary institutions’ Georgia Residency requirements.
  • Be enrolled as a degree-seeking student at a USG, TCSG or eligible private Zell Miller eligible college or university in Georgia.
  • Meet federal Selective Service registration requirements, per Georgia state law.
  • Meet academic achievement standards.
  • Be in good standing on all student loans or other financial aid programs.
  • Be in compliance with the Georgia Drug-Free Postsecondary Education Act of 1990.
  • Not have exceeded the maximum award limits for any HOPE program.

Interestingly, the requirement to register applies to males who were born on or after January 1, 1960 and are at least 18 years. Also, they are citizens or eligible non-citizens who came to the United States prior to age 26;

Note:

Students must not be in default on any federal or state of Georgia student loan, grant, or scholarship. If a student goes into default on a federal or State of Georgia student loan, the loan must be repaid in full.

Or the default status should be resolved before eligibility can be determined for Zell Miller Scholarship. Thus, students must not owe a refund on a state of Georgia scholarship or grant program.

The refund amount must be paid in full before eligibility can be determined for Zell Miller Scholarship.

Georgia Residency Zell Miller Scholarship Requirements

Georgia Residency Zell Miller Scholarship Requirements

Georgia residency, for purposes of the State Programs, is determined by the eligible college or university.  Documentation proving Georgia residency may be required by the college or university.

For students attending an institution in the University System, residency determination is based on USG Board of Regents policy.

Also, for students attending an institution in the Technical College System residency determination, it is based on TCSG policy.

For students attending eligible private institutions, residency determination is based on Georgia Residency Requirements at Private Institutions regulations.

Students Attending a USG or TCSG Institution Zell Miller Scholarship Requirements

If, the institution determines a student was a Georgia resident at the time of high school graduation, home study completion or High School Equivalency diploma date, the student:

  • Must meet the Georgia residency requirement. And this is for a minimum of 12 consecutive months. This is prior to the first day of the term for which state funding is sought. If, the institution determines a student was not a Georgia resident at the time of high school graduation, home study completion or High School Equivalency diploma date, the student:
  • Must meet the Georgia residency requirement for a minimum of 24 consecutive months. And this is prior to the first day of the term for which state funding is sought.

Zell Miller Scholarship Application

To be considered for the Zell Miller Scholarship, note. You must complete the:

  • Georgia Tech Application for Scholarships and Financial Aid (GT App),
  • FAFSA or the Georgia Student Financial Aid Application (GSFAPPS) every year.
